FOUNDER NOTES — TRAINING

I LOVED HITTING A TIRE WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER.
I JUST NEVER HAD ANYWHERE TO DO IT.

Why a garage-sized problem took eleven failed prototypes to solve, and what finally replaced the 400 lb tire.

The problem was never the workout. It was finding anywhere to actually do it.

I love aggressive, high-intensity training. Always have. It's a habit that goes back to Army Special Forces. On deployment, there's no gym, so you learn to make training happen with whatever's around. My favorite way to blow off stress and get a real workout was always hitting a tractor tire with a sledgehammer. The problem, years later, was that I didn't have anywhere to actually do it.

There's something different about that kind of workout. You're not sitting on a machine counting reps. You're swinging something heavy, hitting something hard, and getting everything out of your system while your whole body works.

A tractor tire is 300 to 500 pounds and takes up half a garage. I didn't have the space for one at home, and there was no version of showing up to a traditional gym and swinging a sledgehammer at a tire in the middle of the floor.

Something Needed To Change. I Just Didn't Want To Give Up The Workout To Get There.

— Grady Powell, Founder

So I started testing materials that could take a full sledgehammer strike without needing a 400lb tire to absorb it. Loading dock bumpers. Laminated rubber sheets. Nothing held up to repeated hits the way a tire does. Eventually I stopped looking for something that already existed and started building one.

It took eleven prototypes before one gave the impact absorption I wanted in something that could fit in a closet.

The pad ended up solving more than my own space problem. Gym owners were pulling tires out of their floor plans as membership grew, because they ate up space that a class needed. Guys on the road couldn't exactly throw a tire in a truck bed. Turns out "I don't have room for this" was never just my problem.

Have you ever just needed to HIT something? I definitely have. Somehow even though I end up completely drenched and out of breath, this is weirdly calming.

We used to have tires in our gym and of course we all loved the sledgehammer workouts. But as member numbers grew, I couldn't justify all the space eaten up by tires and they had to go. Haxe solved that problem.

I do love a sledgehammer workout but I can't take that huge tractor tire on the go with me.
